The Indiana University Fraternity and Sorority Community began an initiative in 2004 focused on the integration of our core principles into the assessment program. This initiative was a response to a joint effort from college and university presidents and the national governing councils (NPHC, NIC, NPC, and NALFO) to advocate for an assessment process that would unify the goals and values of the all fraternities and sororities. These core values represent not only the learning goals of the chapters and each individual member but also of the university and its commitment of providing meaningful experiences outside the classroom.

Assessment

  • Founders Values Education: Chapter teaches and upholds the values of their organization, Fraternity and Sorority community, and Indiana University. Chapters are responsible for its actions and understand their implications within the Fraternity and Sorority and campus community.
  • William Lowe Bryan Academic Support and Scholarship: Chapter develops and maintains a scholarship program for its members that will enhance their academic success and contribute to the academic mission of the university.
  • Richard N. McKaig Brotherhood and Sisterhood: Chapter respects the dignity of people while embracing the free exchange of ideas and beliefs. Chapter educates and promotes healthy lifestyles. Chapter fosters brotherhood and sisterhood between all Fraternity and Sorority organizations.
  • Herman B Wells Leadership Development: Chapter encourages leadership development and promotes leadership opportunities for its members.
  • Crimson Citizenship: Chapters engage in meaningful, comprehensive civic engagement and community partnerships.

In addition to these five assessment areas, chapters that participate in all five assessment areas will be eligible for an overall recognition of achievement.

  • Overall Recognition:  Overall recognition will be given to the chapter that has demonstrated excellent and/or exemplary achievement, upholds the ideas and values espoused by the chapter, the IU Fraternity and Sorority community, and the Indiana University mission statement.

Implementation

The assessment will be implemented in two stages.

  • First, the individual chapters will use the self-assessment tool to self-evaluate their chapter on the five areas as outlined above.
  • Second, judges, who may be staff or faculty, will evaluate the chapters. The judges will base their evaluation on the completed self-assessment and a face-to-face conversation with chapter representatives.

Feedback

The Fraternity and Sorority Assessment program offers three feedback opportunities. The first feedback is provided during the conversation with judges. This immediate feedback should clarify to the participants the areas in which they are doing well and those that may need improvement.  Rubric rankings from the meeting with the judges provide a second feedback opportunity. Finally, the notes and selected rubrics become the basis of ongoing conversations with support staff and advisors through the year.

The participants should not view the assessment as a test or examination, but as a process through which the activities, mission, goals and objectives of the chapter are clarified, and any necessary improvements implemented. This feedback is important as it addresses the purpose of the assessment exercise, i.e. to assist chapters to improve their goals and integrate core values.
