Steve Veldkamp

Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Student Activities

In this role, Steve and his staff advise, coach, and educate student leaders representing 650 student organizations.  Steve is a member of the National Association of Student Personal Administrators, the Association of Fraternity Advisors, Director of the Interfraternity Institute, and is the Executive Director of the Center for the Study of the College Fraternity.  He recently completed work with college and university presidents responsible for the Call for Values Congruence document.  This document serves as a guide for colleges and universities across the country to improve Greek communities.  Steve’s assessment experiences include admissions marketing, college surveys, teaching assessment in the college environments, and conducting focus groups for the North Central Accreditation. Before becoming a Hoosier, Steve spent time working at Western Michigan University and the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire in student development.  Steve’s prior corporate experience includes working for public relations and advertising firms in West Michigan as well as an educational consultant for colleges and high schools.  Steve is a two time graduate of Grand Valley State University with a Bachelor’s in Marketing and Master’s in Organizational Communications and Management.

Darrell Ann currently serves as the Associate Director of Student Activities at Indiana University.  She is originally from Boston, Massachusetts where she received a Bachelor degree from Northeastern University with honors in Theatre and Drama.   Ms. Stone has had a prior professional career working in theatre as an actor, director and educator as well as non-profit social services.  Directly prior to her current position at Indiana University, she was Crisis Intervention Services Coordinator for eight years at Middle Way House, a local non-profit agency.  In addition to coordinating their rape crisis center and crisis line program, Darrell Ann was their public speaker and training facilitator for law enforcement, hospitals, and high schools on the topics of cycle of violence, conflict resolution, and communication.

Ms. Stone obtained a Master of Social Work degree from Indiana University and currently serves part time as associate faculty in the I.U. School of Social Work.  In this capacity she teaches such courses as Poverty in the U.S. and Understanding Diversity in a Pluralistic Society and serves as a field supervisor to practicum students during their senior year.  

As I.U. associate director of student activities, Darrell Ann supervises graduate students as well as professional staff in the areas of civic engagement, student development and student organization support.  Darrell Ann is a member of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA), the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) and Indiana Campus Compact (ICC).   She has learned that her most passionate and enjoyable career niche is that special area which combines education and social work. 


Jeremiah Shinn

Jeremiah currently serves as the Associate Director of Student Activities at Indiana University.  Prior to his work in Bloomington, he served as an Assistant Dean of Students and Adjunct Instructor in the Educational Leadership Graduate Program at Eastern Michigan University.  He received his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Arkansas Tech University, his Master of Arts in Higher Education from the University of Michigan and is in the final stages of completing a Doctorate in Education from Eastern Michigan University.  Jeremiah’s research interests lie in organizational sociology, politics and culture. 

In addition to his work at Indiana University, Jeremiah is an active presenter, facilitator and consultant.  In these capacities, he has worked with scores of student organizations, universities and non-profit organizations on topics ranging from purpose-based leadership to organizational development. 

Outside of the office, Jeremiah is an avid fan of the Detroit Lions, enjoys cycling, photography and loud music.  He has visited more than 20 countries and has no intention of being finished in the near future.

Leslie Fasone is the advisor for the Inter-fraternity and Panhellenic Councils where she works with 48 IFC and Panhellenic chapters.  Prior to her current position, she worked at Kappa Alpha Theta Fraternity Headquarters as an Educational Leadership Consultant for two years where she traveled to over 40 college campuses, and as then as the Chapter Services Programs Coordinator for one year.  As an undergraduate student, Leslie served as the Panhellenic President for Indiana University and as philanthropy/service chairperson for her chapter.  She obtained her B.S. in Business from IU in 2003 and is currently working on her Master’s in Counseling.  Leslie has been a facilitator for the Undergraduate Interfraternity Institute, Wooden Institute, Kappa Alpha Theta District Leadership Conferences and has coordinated several IMPACT retreats and facilitated campus-based values-focused workshops.  She has also been working with Colleen Rose to help develop service-based initiatives and provide learning experiences to help engage fraternity and sorority students in the non-profit community.

Civic Engagement Coordinator

Colleen Rose is the first Civic Engagement Coordinator for IU-B.  She serves as the bridge between curricular and co-curricular civic engagement efforts, dividing her time between the Student Activities Office (SAO) and the Office of Service-Learning (OSL).  Since 2007 Colleen has been working diligently with SAO staff and campus and community colleagues to connect incoming freshman, student organizations, and fraternities and sororities with opportunities for service and civic engagement education.  Her efforts have most notably been focused on developing training and support for fraternity and sorority student leaders with a passion for philanthropy and service.  Through OSL Colleen supervises 25 undergraduate assistants in the service-learning leadership program Advocates for Community Engagement (ACE).   ACEs serve as liaisons between local community organizations and IU service-learning courses.  She also serves as IU-B’s Community Service Director with Indiana Campus Compact.

A native Hoosier, Colleen graduated from Indiana University-Bloomington with a Bachelor of Science in Human Development/Family Studies with Highest Distinction.  She is a former Americorps*VISTA member and ACE alumnae.  She is currently pursuing a Masters of Social Work at Indiana University. Outside of work Colleen enjoys working in the garden, cooking meals for her friends, riding her bicycle and looking at old houses.    

 

Sarah Wilcox

Sarah is the first Student Organizations Coordinator for Student Activities. As the Student Organizations Coordinator, she serves the student organization community (650+ groups) by coordinating and promoting co-curricular and curricular opportunities, including the IU Student Involvement Fair, Student Organization Orientation, and the Student Organization Celebration.

Originally from Mableton, GA, she attended the University of Georgia and graduated with a B.A. in Speech Communication in August 2005. After considering her next move, she applied to two Student Affairs programs and found her home at IU. Sarah served as a graduate assistant in Student Activities from 2006 - 2008. Sarah graduated in May 2008 from Indiana University with a M.S. in Student Affairs Administration. She is looking forward to continuing to work at IU in Student Activities because of the amazing colleagues and friends she has made there.


Ellen Shertzer

Ellen Shertzer works part-time for Indiana University as the Greek Alumni Coordinator.  She is the staff liaison to all fraternity and sorority alumni and the Alumni Interfraternity Council and Alumnae Panhellenic Council.  Ellen organizes all communication pieces and training programs for chapter advisors and volunteers. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Public Communication and Human Relations from Western Illinois University and her Master of Science in Higher Education Administration from Iowa State University.  Ellen has spent the last 10 years working in higher education administration at Northern Illinois University, Iowa State University, and University of Maryland College Park.  She has experience in fraternity and sorority life, student programming, and alumni association management.

Jessica Dyrdahl, originally from Fargo, North Dakota, is an honors graduate from Colorado State University in Fort Collins, CO. She received her Bachelor degree in both Political Science and Spanish and also attended the Universidad de Alcala in Alcala de Henares, Spain, for a semester. During her undergraduate career, Jessica was involved in numerous areas on the Fort Collins campus, but focused her time within the honors program, student government and the student center governing board. After graduating in May 2007, Jessica began working for Colorado State as an admissions counselor and frequently traveled to Washington, D.C. on recruiting trips. Her passion is to help others see and live up to their full potential and she is excited to return to a classroom setting. Beginning Fall 2008, she will pursue a Master degree in the Higher Education and Student Affairs program at Indiana University.

 

Andrea Robledo

Andrea Robledo, a native of San Angelo, Texas, is an honors graduate from Texas A&M University- College Station with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Spanish minor.  Andrea worked in youth development for 3 years with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Fort Worth.  She has spent much of her career working with youth of color and has developed numerous training and workshop sessions for youth related to employment and skill building.  On June 20, 2003 she began working at the Multicultural Center at University of North Texas.  There, Ms. Robledo was responsible for planning and developing cultural programs for the University of North Texas community. This allowed her to collaborate with cultural based organizations, NPHC fraternity and sororities as well as Multicultural Greek organizations.  During her time at UNT, Andrea earned her Master’s in Applied Anthropology by completing a practicum with the Multicultural Center.  The needs assessment design of the practicum allowed her to recommend programmatic changes to increase student participation with the Multicultural Center, and ultimately develop a community based recruitment/retention program for Latino/a students at UNT.  After four years of service to UNT, Ms. Robledo moved to Indiana to pursue her doctoral degree in the HESA program at Indiana University.  Her research interests include experiences of students of color at predominately white institutions, and more specifically Latino/a experiences in higher education.

In May 2008, Laura earned her Bachelors degree from Missouri State University in Communications with an emphasis in Public Relations and a minor in Advertising and Promotions. She also has worked with the North American Interfraternal Conference as a UIFI graduate and intern, Futures Quest mentor and IMPACT coordinator for Missouri State University. She has previously held the position of Director of Social Awareness for Panhellenic Association at Missouri State University and presented at conferences such as Mid-American Greek Council Association on Greek Unity and chapter development. Laura is originally from St. Louis, MO and new to the state of Indiana. She enjoys working with organizations on effective communication methods and membership development. Currently, she is a graduate student in the Higher Education and Student Affairs (HESA) program at Indiana University until Spring 2010. Laura advises the Student Organization Ethics Board and is responsible for their selection, training and support.  The Ethics Board is responsible for holding the IU Student Organization community to the standards of behavior in the IU Student Code of Conduct.  Laura also develops and facilitates risk reduction, ethical decision making, values clarification and leadership development programs for the officers and membership of Greek community and student organizations.

R.J. is a graduate of the University of Kansas with a Bachelor's degree in Communication Studies.  As an undergraduate he was heavily involved in university governance, serving 3 terms as a Student Senator, a term as Vice President of the University Council, Interfraternity Council Vice President for Philanthropy and Community Service.  R.J. also worked as an Orientation Assistant and graduated from the LeaderShape Institute.  Since college R.J. has extensive experience in marketing, team building and problem solving through his role as General Manager of a family owned car dealership in suburban Chicago. R.J. is pursuing a Masters degree in the Higher Education and Student Affairs program at Indiana University.  My primary interest is encouraging and supporting student involvement and leadership throughout the undergraduate experience.

Danielle DeSawal

Danielle M. De Sawal currently serves as the Clinical Assistant Professor and Coordinator of the Master’s Program in Higher Education and Student Affairs at Indiana University. This is her fourth year on the faculty where she is responsible for the program administration of the master’s program and teaching graduate level courses including Introduction to Student Affairs, College and University Administration, Student Development, Administrative Practices, and Advising Student Organizations. Previously she has served as research assistant on a national grant related to Latino/a college student experiences. She also has worked for the Association of College Unions International (ACUI) as the educational program coordinator and was responsible for the implementation of professional development seminars and institutes. She holds a B.S. from Colorado State University, a M.Ed from the University of Arkansas, and a Ph.D. from Indiana University.
